Ralph Snodsmith first began to learn the difference between "roots and shoots" at the University of Illinois where he received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture. In 1965 he started as Agricultural Extension Agent in Rockland County, NY, and in 1970 assumed the position of Executive Director of the Queens Botanical Garden in Flushing, NY.

Mr. Snodsmith has lectured at the New York Botanical Garden since 1968. In 1985, for his accomplishments in horticultural education, he was awarded both The New York Botanical Garden Distinguished Service Award and The New York Botanical Garden Distinguished Educator in Plant Studies Award. In 1998 a very rare evergreen, called Picea brewerana (or Brewer's spruce) was planted in his honor.

As the popular host of The Garden HotlineŽ, Ralph has been heard on WRKL, WLIR, WRCR, WOR Radio Network, and ABC Talkradio Weekend. In his eight years of appearances on Good Morning America as gardening editor, Ralph Snodsmith educated millions of Americans about plants and their proper care. In 1982, for his contributions to broadcast journalism in the field of horticulture, he was honored with the Willard H. Allen Agricultural Communications Award by the New Jersey Agricultural Society. In 1992, Ralph was presented with the American Horticultural Society Communications Award.

Since 1984, Mr. Snodsmith has written the gardening section for Americana Encyclopedia Yearbook. He is a member of Garden Writers of America and over the years has contributed to many publications. In 1995, he received the Ram's Horn Award from the State University of New York at Farmingdale.

In 1993, he distilled his 25 years of experience teaching at the New York Botanical Garden into an eminently comprehensive and usable guide for gardeners of every level, Ralph Snodsmith's Fundamentals of Gardening. (Available on this site.) He also authored Tips From the Garden Hotline, and hundreds of fact sheets and newsletter articles. His third book is due out this year.

Ralph lives with his wife Mary in Rockland County, NY, where he puts his horticultural expertise to practical use. He is also one "plant doctor" who still makes house calls.
